Artists in residence

Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

Zoia Laktionova

Year/s of residence : 2024, 2–12

Cinema

Zoya Laktionova was born in Mariupol (Ukraine), in a working class family in 1984. She is a filmmaker and visual artist who uses moving images, photography, and texts in her works. Zoya aims to convey emotions through art metaphors intertwined with the dramatic language of cinema. In her artistic practice, she adopts micro-history, auto-ethnography and creative storytelling to unfold the complexity of greater events and historical contexts. This often makes it difficult to clearly allocate Zoya’s films, which is why they are shown both at film festivals (DOK Leipzig, FID Marseille, Cottbus etc) and in art museums such as the Center Pompidou, Palais de Tokyo in Paris or the MUMOK in Vienna.

Zoya is a recipient of the Harriman Institute Residency at Columbia University 2022-2023, Civitella Visual ArtsFellow 2023-2024, Academy of Fine Arts Vienna Resident 2023-2024, Film Independent Global Media Makers Fellow 2024.

Reyhan Lál

Year/s of residence : 2025, In situ

Cinema

Reyhan Lál (b. 1993, Tehran) is a film and performance artist. Having initially studied Architecture, Lál started her art practice in 2017 within Tehran’s underground scene. While her early works took place in the public sphere, her current pieces are inclined to take shape within a more theatrical setup.

Lál’s works centre on the enduring themes of the human condition, and strategically attempt to interfere with established orders in an ironic and playful manner. Involving various characters, stage layouts, and languages, she employs a fusion of scripted and improvisational compositions to consistently reshape the conceptual landscape of the stage. Within her work, elements unveil specific statements, often on the verge of undermining themselves. By asserting and reclaiming authority, she actively involves both the crew and the audience in the development process, offering a wildly open-ended experience.

Lál has also organized several artistic programs, including three editions of the Tehran Art Book Fair, from 2019 to 2021. In 2023, she initiated a film project based in the Netherlands, titled Good Film, Bad Film.
