Artists in residence

Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

Visual arts

Nourished by dance and cinema, Frédéric Nauczyciel makes photographs, films and performances that he constructs collaboratively with his protagonists. Since 2011, he has deployed his work between the black ghettos of Baltimore and the outskirts of Paris, drawing on the strength of performative languages such as voguing.

He exhibits in France (Musée de la Chasse in Paris, MAC/VAL, Été photographique de Lectoure, Rencontres internationales de photographie d’Arles, Festival d’Avignon, Centre Pompidou-Paris), in Barcelona and in the United States. In 2011, he is a recipient of the Villa Médicis program outside the walls for the United States (Institut français), in 2013 he receives a research grant from the National Center for Plastic Arts and his works are in the collection of the National Fund for Contemporary Art.

In 2017, after applying for a residency at the Cité internationale des arts to prepare his video installation La Peau Vive at the Musée d’art et d’histoire de Saint-Denis, he was selected to become an associate artist of the foundation. This status allowed him to stimulate ideas and create dynamic links within the community of residents, and to foster collaborations internally and with external partners. Through his multiple projects, Frédéric Nauczyciel builds bridges to animate the Cité internationale des arts in situ and fringe events.

Theater

Camil Navarro is an interdisciplinary Chilean artist whose practice stems from theater, dance, music, and performance.

Their work investigates the notion of the critical body, situating the physicality of the performer as a pivotal axis of exploration of identity spaces in a continuous change of figure and fundamentals. Based on somatic strategies, choreographic operations, experimental vocalizations, and writing procedures, their performances deal with themes and contexts related to resistance movements and civil disobedience in Chile and Latin America; water and environmental crisis due to anthropogenic causes; and discussions around the Western and cisgender cultural matrix through an ethical and methodological position from transgender perspectives.

In 2022, Camil was a recipient of the French Institute of Chile and Cité Internationale des Arts international program. During his second residency within the framework of the Cité internationale des arts 2-12 Program, he will develop a choreographic research process at La Fabrique Chaillot – Théâtre national de la Danse, in collaboration with drag artists -both Drag Queens and Kings- from the Centre LGBTQI+ Paris-îDF, for the creation of a Trans-gestural Laboratory: A protected space that allows us to make visible our invisible gestural memories and the deliberate manifestation of our politics of difference.
