Artists in residence

Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

Visual arts

Salman Nawati was born in 1987 in Palestine. He lives and works in the Gaza Strip. He is an artist and works as well as an administrative coordinator for the Art programme in Qattan Foundation/Gaza center. He has been working as an art teacher at the Fine arts college and at Al-Aqsa University. He has also been art director for several art festivals in Gaza. His practice spans different artistic fields such as drawing, sculpture, installations, design, photography, filmmaking, theater, music, and art therapy. In his artistic project, Salman Nawati focuses on expressing himself as a human.

In the absence of a responsible authority for the protection of the antiquity and artistic property in the Gaza Strip, Salman Nawati, along with, artist Mohamed Abusall and architect Sondos El Nakhala, will collaborate on an imaginary museum, a museum focusing on the historical and artistic heritage of the Gaza Strip, which would be accessible to all. This museum will not be physically present but will be a digital incubator gathering an assortment of antique objects, cultural relics, and artworks, for some completely imagined, in the format of digital replicas. This project is jointly developed with Mohamed Bourouissa who will also produce a video showing the entire production stages of the museum. The final product of this project will be a virtual reality presentation to be exhibited at the Palais de Tokyo in 2023, where the public will discover the Imaginary Museum of Gaza through this virtual portal.

Cheikh Ndiaye is particularly interested in architecture and urbanism. Composed of paintings, photography, and installations, his body of work is guided by a singular gaze to the informal economies of African metropolis. Retrieved from a lethal state, obsolete objects are brought back to life. The objects return to their material plenitude and are project into a renewed imaginary.

The artist lives and works in New York and Dakar. He graduated from the National School of fine Arts in Dakar and the School of Fine Arts in Lyon, France. He has participated in numerous exhibitions across Africa and Europe namely Hippocampus at La Maréchalerie in Versailles in 2017 and in his solo exhibitions at the Galerie Cécile Fakhoury. His work is a part of the permanent collections of the Centre Pompidou, Paris, FRAC, Grand-Large-Hauts-de-France, CNAP and Kadist Art Foundation. His work was exhibited at the 56th Venice Biennale All the World’s Futures, curated by Okwui Enwezor, Dak’Art Biennale (2012, 2016, and 2018) and Havana Biennale (2019). Most recently, Ndiaye’s work was included in Sanguine. Luc Tuymans on Baroque at Fondazione Prada in Milan, Italy.

Visual arts

Ibrahima Ndome (Dakar), Safi Niang (Conakry/Paris) and Souleymane Bachir Diaw (Dakar/Paris) are part of the Atelier Ndokette collective. They have been working together since 2019 and use photography and fashion design as their main mediums. Beyond a clothing tradition, Ndokette is a Senegalese word that refers to a tunic which represents the cultural Senegalese heritage traveling across the eras. The collective questions this temporality notion through experimentations.

Living between Dakar, Paris and Conakry, the collective has been firstly a place of conversations around their own contemporary socio-cultural ecosystems of which the complexity and the issues are growing. Photographs, videos and performances attest to these experiences focused on the present moment research in full consciousness, freed from a recalled past and an idealized future. The collective represents a laboratory of ideas, concepts and solutions.
