Artists in residence

Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

Wura-Natasha Ogunji

Wura-Natasha Ogunji is a visual artist and performer. Her works include drawings hand-stitched into tracing paper, videos and public performances.  Her work is deeply inspired by the daily interactions and frequencies that occur in the city of Lagos, Nigeria, from the epic to the intimate. Wura-Natasha Ogunji’s performances explore the presence of women in public space; these often include investigations of labor, leisure, freedom and frivolity. 

For her residency, she will create a memoir of Lagos in the form of large-scale drawings and hand-stitched texts.  Parallel to these investigations, she will develop a series of workshops which explore and expand the genre of memoir through collective performances which focus on language and mark-making; family histories and body memory; utopias and their opposites. 

Mobolaji Ogunrosoye

Mobolaji Ogunrosoye is a self-taught visual artist who lives and works in Lagos, Nigeria. Mobolaji Ogunrosoye works at the intersection of photography and collage, using these mediums to explore multidimensionality and perception in images of Black and Nigerian women.

Over the past three years, Mobolaji Ogunrosoye’s artistic journey has been devoted to developing two essential bodies of work in her practice: Portraits and Contrasts in Loveliness. These projects explore the manipulation of selected materials as well as captured and found images to construct abstract collages.

Between 2021 and 2023, Mobolaji Ogunrosoye worked on Portraits, which examines what a portrait can look like outside of its traditional form. Mobolaji Ogunrosoye explores this through the manipulation of paper and smoke, observing how these materials slowly degrade over time while appearing unchanged on the surface. The results of these experiments were presented in the group exhibition Making Face at the Rele Gallery, Lagos, Nigeria, in 2021. Mobolaji Ogunrosoye then further developed this work by replacing paper with Perspex for the group exhibition The Becoming at Peres Projects, Berlin, Germany, in 2023. The aim was to examine how transparency could be used as a tool for distortion: Mobolaji Ogunrosoye explores how different types of transparent materials — varying in weight, thickness, colour and other qualities — can distort, magnify and create illusions in photographed and collaged images.

Continuing this approach, Mobolaji Ogunrosoye further explored distortion and fragmentation by incorporating Perspex into installations presented at the Grow It, Show It exhibitions at the Museum Folkwang, Essen, Germany, and the Jaou Tunis Biennale, Tunis, Tunisia, both in 2024.
