Artists in residence

Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

PERFORMING ARTS

DANCE

Jared Onyango is a dance artist based in Nairobi, Kenya. He conceives and presents his works as contemporary dance performances and explores other media. He is interested in themes related to the way the body is presented and alternative forms of spectators with a keen interest in the black body, rituals and philosophy.

As a 2016 Pina Bausch Foundation Fellow, Jared Onyango worked with Francesco Scavetta, Italian choreographer of WEE Dance Company based in Norway and artistic director of the Vitlycke Performing Arts Centre in Sweden. His latest works include Jua Kali Pedestrian Project presented at the Kla Art Festival in Kampala, Uganda and Body In A Box presented at the Goethe Institute Kenya. Jared currently works in the community of Kariobangi where he leads dance workshops and training programs for local dance groups.

He continues his efforts to discover his personal journey and find his own voice in dance as well as his current philosophy of sharing the great joy of the movement. Jared believes that we can experience the pleasures of dancing and learning the many methods of expression through body movement. He believes that artists have an obligation to show society how art can be integrated into the mainstream of our societies. His combined experience and commitment offer the benefits that only a dedicated artist can offer.
