Presentation
The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the Cité internationale des arts have co-constructed an annual residency programme for curators of all nationalities residing in Portugal. Initiated in 2023, the aim of this programme is to facilitate mobility and support research, as well as the expansion of the professional network of curators on the Portuguese art scene.
Following this open call and the selection committee meeting, two curators will be selected and will each receive a three-month residency, mentoring, professional networking opportunities, and financial support.
The residency
The residency includes:
- Support, opportunities for discussion, meetings, and networking organized by the residency program partners;
- A live-in studio on the Marais site of the Cité internationale des arts;
- A living allowance (for travel, food, and insurance expenses) of €1,000 net of taxes per month;
- Research assistance of €1,000 including tax and coverage of travel expenses between the applicant’s home in Portugal and the Cité internationale des arts up to €250 including tax, upon presentation of proof of payment.

Eligibility criteria
The programme is open to exhibition curators. of any nationality who:
- Reside and work in Portugal;
- Have at least five years’ experience in curatorial practice.
Collective applications are accepted and will result in the allocation of one live-in studio and the payment of one living allowance, one production grant, and the announced amount for travel expenses.
Applications will be reviewed by a multidisciplinary jury composed of qualified figures from the French and Portuguese arts sectors.
In addition to evaluating professional experience, jury members will pay particular attention to
- The quality of the application and the research project presented;
- The arguments presented regarding the necessity of this residency in France and at the Cité internationale des arts;
- The proposed work protocol and any contacts or partnerships already established with a view to developing a residency project.
FAQ
How to Apply?
Applications to the Cité internationale des arts commissions must be submitted via the dedicated online form.
A Google account is required to submit your application. If you do not have one, please create one HERE.
The application form must be completed in full and requires:
- A curriculum vitae and a written biography summarising the candidate’s career, in French or English;
- A dossier presenting one or more recent curatorial projects (15 pages maximum), in French or English;
- A statement of intent, in French or English, in which candidates present their residency project and explain their motivations and interest in joining the residency programme. In particular, they must explain why their work justifies the need for this residency in Paris and at the Cité internationale des arts, from an artistic, career and professional networking perspective (maximum 3 pages).
Ils devront notamment présenter les raisons pour lesquelles leur travail justifie la nécessité de cette résidence à Paris et au sein de la Cité internationale des arts, d’un point de vue à la fois artistique, de parcours et de réseau professionnel (3 pages maximum).
Collective applications must be submitted as a single application in the name of both artists, for a joint project.
Residency conditions
The winners will be accommodated in studio apartments located on the site of the Cité internationale des arts marsh. Ranging in size from 25 to 40m², the studio apartments are designed to combine research and creation with everyday life. They consist of a work room, a kitchen, a bathroom and a sleeping area. A studio apartment can accommodate up to two adults and one child up to the age of 10. Additional fees apply for accompanying persons.
Unfortunately, the studio apartments on offer do not currently meet accessibility standards for people with disabilities, but we are working to improve this for the future.
