Cemeti x Cité internationale des arts

Programme for artists and curators based in Indonesia, and for former residents of the Cité internationale des arts

Programme

The Institut français d’Indonésie et du Timor Leste (IFI), CEMETI Institute for Art and Society, and the Cité internationale des arts are running a funded and reciprocal residency, creation and research programme for artists and curators based in Indonesia and France. The aim of the programme is to encourage and facilitate the mobility of artists from France and Indonesia, and to expand their artistic network. Following the launch of a call for proposals and the organisation of a committee bringing together the partners, each year, an artist based in Indonesia is hosted for 3 months at the Cité internationale des arts in Paris, and a former resident of the Cité internationale des arts is hosted for 2 months at CEMETI in Yogyakarta.

The partners undertake to support the project of each winner by enabling them to benefit from funded residencies, including professional support and networking, both in Paris and in Yogyakarta.

The partners of this programme :

CEMETI – Institute for Art and Society

Cemeti – Institute for Art and Society (formerly ‘Cemeti Gallery’, then ‘Cemeti Art House’) is Indonesia’s oldest platform for contemporary art, founded in Yogyakarta in 1988 by artists Mella Jaarsma and Nindityo Adipurnomo. Cemeti offers a platform for artists and cultural practitioners to develop, present and practice their work in close collaboration with curators, researchers, activists, writers and performers, as well as local communities across Yogyakarta.

The programme takes shape through exhibitions, workshops, talks, assemblies, publications, long-term research threads and a three-month artist-in-residence programme (held twice annually).

The subtitle ‘Institute for Art and Society’ was added in 2017 by a new team to express the organisations commitment to socially and politically engaged artistic practices, exploring the possibility for a gallery to act as a site for civic action.

Institut français d’Indonésie

Institut français Indonésie (IFI) is a service of the French Embassy in Indonesia and Timor Leste, with branches in Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, and Surabaya. It aims to strengthen ties between Indonesia, Timor Leste and France in scientific, academic, linguistic, and cultural fields. In addition to offering French language courses at all levels, IFI supports students, teachers, researchers, and artists in pursuing opportunities in France, in collaboration with the national agency Campus France.

Alongside its educational and scientific initiatives, IFI is actively involved in cultural and artistic promotion. It organizes numerous weekly events across its network, ranging from debates, literature, live performances, gastronomy, cinema, and architecture, among others. IFI also supports the development of cultural and creative industries by facilitating support programmes and professional networking opportunities.
