Artists in residence

Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

Visual arts

Born in Marseille in 1995, Romane Bladou is a French-Canadian artist and author. Her interdisciplinary practice is rooted in the language of photography. Using a phenomenological approach, she explores the ephemeral and the places we pass through. In her work, Romane seeks to evoke a multi-sensory experience in words, images and objects – our bodies in space and light as clockwork. The question she poses is: how can we represent what we cannot fully perceive? Her practice is a translation of these moments of liminality into multimedia installations – a materialization of the intangible, an emphasis on the overlooked.

Romane holds a Bachelor’s degree in Photography from Concordia University in Tiohtiá:ke/Montreal (2016) and a Master’s degree in Fine Arts from Emily Carr University of Art + Design in Vancouver (2020), located on the unceded territories of the Coast Salish peoples, including the Squamish, Musqueam and Tsleil-Waututh nations. She taught photography and new media there until she returned to France in the fall of 2023.

In March 2023, Romane published her first novel, Atlantique Nord, published by La Peuplade. It’s about ends of the world, insularity, too much, not enough, salt and women. Her work has been exhibited internationally, and she has shared her writings and photographs in various literary and artistic publications. She has also been commissioned by the City of Vancouver to create a work of public art.
Her research has been supported by the Canada Council for the Arts, the Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Québec, the British Columbia Arts Council and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.

Romane has participated in artistic residencies, including at the Headlands Centre for the Arts in Sausalito, California, NES Artist Residency in Iceland, and others in Canada and Argentina.
Increasingly, fiction is taking its place in her work. Through photographic staging, cinematic lighting and indistinguishable characters, Romane attempts to navigate confusion and create a narrative guided by suggestion. This is what she’s focusing on during her residency at the Cité internationale des arts.
