Artists in residence

Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

Amir Youssef is an Egyptian artist and filmmaker living and working between Paris and Alexandria. His practice explores the links between pre-cinema, media archaeology and narrative through sculpture, installation, film and video. Intrigued by the transformation of objects, their meaning, function and history, he examines the way in which they take part in the dynamics of movement and narrative. This research led him to coin the term Kinemania, denoting his ongoing investigation into the human obsession with visual movement, which he materialises through the creation of kinetic and dynamic objects.

He graduated with a BA in Painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Alexandria University in 2015. He pursued a master’s degree (DNSEP) at the École d’art d’Aix-en-Provence in France, followed by a diploma at Le Fresnoy – Studio national des arts contemporains.

With an academic background in the visual arts and cinema, Youssef takes a critical look at historical issues, particularly those linked to colonialism, as well as spiritual debates. He fights against the fixed narratives of nature, so easily transmitted by museums, by offering a poetic and introspective re-reading. He explores the absurdity of war and post-colonial legacies, while transforming sacred texts into transcendent, poetic forms. This research invites the viewer on a journey that is both cosmic and contemplative, combining historical criticism with a metaphysical quest.

Youssef has exhibited and screened his work internationally, notably at Visions du Réel in Switzerland, Ars Electronica in Linz (Austria), the Vasarely Foundation in Aix-en-Provence (France) and Panorama at Le Fresnoy in Tourcoing (France), the BJCM Biennial in Milan (Italy), the Textile Industry Museum in Augsburg (Germany), the Salon de la Jeunesse at the Cairo Opera House (Egypt), and the Agenda exhibition at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (Egypt).

Youssef’s awards include the Studio Art Collector for his film EMAN and the Prix Émergence de la Scam for his film Apoléon.
