Artists in residence

Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

Literature

Warren Bartolo is a writer and translator from Malta. After graduating with a Bachelors in Classics and a Masters in Comparative Literature, Warren translated David Horvitz’s artist book How to Shoplift Books from English to Maltese. In 2023 his translation of Sappho’s poetry from Ancient Greek to Maltese titled Il-Frammenti ta’ Saffo was funded by the National Book Council of Malta and published by Edebooksand and won the National Book Award for Translation in 2024. His writing is published regularly on the Maltese literary journal Aphroconfuso. He works mainly with the genre of the diary and his writing often draws towards and away from literary figures.

At Cité internationale des arts, Warren will be doing research on the French writer Guillaume Dustan for a literary monograph on the writer. Dustan was a writer and film-maker working predominantely in the late 90s and early 2000s whose work caused an uproar in French queer literature as well as gave new resurgence to the genre of autofiction. Warren’s research will propose a version of criticism or study-writing of Guillaume Dustan through archival material. Furthermore, Warren’s work focuses on processes that tries to unfurl a pathetic relationship between writing and life.
